Which Box?

Postby UnsleevedDuelLand » Fri Jul 22, 2011 1:00 pm

Hello there,

Returning to magic after a 12 year break im looking to buy a box and wanted some advice.

Ive been to darksphere, took part in the GP a few months back, and have been to a standard tourney and m12 pre release at the punch bowl. as ive got all my current cards from those things (about 18 boosters and a few commons and uncommons from kindly people at the GP) my current standard deck is a mono black infect (ive always been a sucker for mono black).

Anyway, question is, now im getting back into it and actually have a job and can afford a box, im wondering which one to go for?

Im thinking a box of M12 as this will give me a good load of staple cards that will be legal for quite a while.

Problem is most of the cards i need for my deck or from scars or besieged, tho i reckon i could trade for them out of what i get in the M12 box or sell for cash to buy them.

does anyone think this is the best course or would anyone suggest somehing different?

Cheers for your time, and maybe ill bump into yu at the punch tavern.

I'm guessing this is the gentleman who walked in one night with an old standard deck and started playing, until we all realised that was an unsleeved Taiga sitting on the table. Unsurprisingly, I flipped :) Did I actually buy you sleeves then and there? I have a feeling I might have done.

Anyway, good sir, welcome to the forums! I would recommend either M12 or Beseiged: M12 will give you a lot more staples, but Beseiged has quite consistent good-money value across its mythics and rares. In general, though, I'd probably go from M12 and build from there. You can also buy singles cheaply from the USA and have them shipped over for pennies: Star City games (www.starcitygames.com) will ship for 3 dollars. Because you're paying in dollars, it's way cheaper than buying from Madhouse or ManaLeak. Just saying :)

Cheers,

Andrew

Hi Andrew, it is indeed 'that guy' thanks for remembering!!

I reckoned M12 was the best thing to get for exactly that reason, thought id get some more sage advice though. Thanks for the confirmation, just gotta wait till pay day now and get the damn thing.

just going through some of my old cards now and fancying having a go at building an EDH deck. would be easier with all my cards down from chester though.

Anyway, ta for the reply, see you around at one of the things!

Matt.

Oh and i think you virtually forced my to sleeve up the card there and then, if you had had a gun it would have been at gun point!

M12 and Scars both rotate out at exactly the same time, so it really doesn't matter.

Forget about the deck you have, and think about the deck you want to have. If you like Black, get New Phyrexia for Obliterator/Karn. It's also a good set due to Batterskull, Sword of WaP, and the Praetors (great tradables).

Prices from SOM and MBS singles have largely decreased now. MBS has Sword of FaF and Tezz, SOM has Koth and Mox Opal. They're fairly similar in terms of money cards.

Prices for M12 are high at the minute, but the cards are untested and could stand to drop dramatically. The Planeswalkers and Titans are all great pulls, but Titans (although excellent to own) are dropping in price dramatically. The most expensive is Primeval, and you can pick them up dirt cheap from eBay now. Jace, Chandra and Garruk are the only real money cards, and their playability is 100% untested.

Overall I recommend New Phyrexia. It has a great deal of playables, cards relevant to mono-black (Sheoldred Karn, Obliterator, Dismember) and the foils of the set are worth a fair bit too (Dismember, any Mythic, and Mental Misstep).

I'd bet my last dime that out of a box of NPH and a box of M12, you'd play more of the NPH cards.

Wait a few months to see how Standard, as a format, is looking.. Then consider buying M12. Or Innistrad, the first set of the next block :)

alright, thats a different view, i see what you mean, i do normally play black, but i like to try other decks. would you say that new phyrexia is as good for other colours as it would be for my black addiction?

ideally id like to get both, get one, sell a few cards plus my fore of will and put that toward the other next pay day. just trying to decide which one.

isnt new phyrexia a smaller set though, so greater chance of multiples of cards, both good and bad ones.

Getting M12 however will line you up with a bunch of staples that you will probably find re-printed in M13 and some in M14. Depends if you are looking at the long game or the slow :).
Currently playing Bloodcrank in Standard and Eggs over Agony in Legacy.

M12 is probably a bad investment as the best cards are reprints. I would recomend waiting for the next set the creator of magic is working on it so it better be good :)

Right ho, i reckon a box of new phyrexia it is then! with some choice selections ordered from america (thanks for that website andrew) followed by a possible M12 purchase in a couple of months, depending on how much play the cards get over that time.

ooh, and i just found another dual land when i was sorting out my old cards. bonus.

thanks for the advice guys

Matt.
